The Kaas Pathar, often referred to as Kaas Plateau or Kas Plateau Reserved Forest, is a plateau located 25 kilometres west of Satara, 50 km from Panchgani and 37 km from Mahabaleshwar, in Maharashtra, India. It is a part of the Western Ghat’s Sahyadri Sub Cluster and has been recognized as UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2012. The Kas Pathar is a sizable volcanic plateau.

The distinctive biodiversity, vast highland plateaus, and meadows of this plateau are very popular. The plateau springs to life during the monsoon season, especially in August, with a stunning vista of many varieties of flowers that embellish the plateau. Kas Plateau is home to at least 150 different species of flowers, shrubs, and grasses, according to the Forest Department.

The Kaas Plateau, commonly referred to as the “Plateau of Flowers,” is a well-known tourist destination in Maharashtra and a favourite picnic destination in the late monsoon season. The plateau is around 1,000 hectares in extent and is located at an elevation of 1200 m. The Kaasa tree is the source of the name “Kaas”.

Due to the thin soil cover and volcanic activity that created the Kaas Plateau, no flora is able to flourish there. This region is located in a zone with heavy rainfall. As a result, the region’s flora and wildlife are highly distinctive.

The colour of the Kaas Plateau truly varies after every few weeks as the cycle of various flowering plants begins in June and becomes denser as the monsoon gets stronger. Expect to witness a staggering array of carnivorous plants, wildflowers, and orchids; it is ideal to have a guide to fully enjoy the small blooms and local wildlife. More than 800 distinct blooming plant species can be found in Kaas, 624 of which are on the IUCN Red List. These include carnivorous plants like Drosera Indica, shrubs like the Karvy, and orchids.

The Kaas Plateau is a catchment area for Koyna Dam. One can witness a view of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary’s extensive evergreen forests from Kas Plateau. As many different types of birds may be seen here, this is also a heaven for bird lovers. Towards the southern end of the Plateau is a beautiful lake known as Kaas Lake.

Kas Pathar or Kaas Plateau is popular with tourists, researchers, and environmental enthusiasts. The number of visitors is capped at 2,000 per day by the government in order to prevent potential harm from tourism impacts. It is a beautiful pleasure to stroll through the flowers that blanket the Plateau.

As a result of its scenic beauty, friendly residents, religious and cultural peace, heritage, architecture, art, and culture, Kas Pathar has already made a name for itself as a renowned tourist destination on both the national and international stage, earning it an enviable brand position.
